STC – Central Iowa Continuing Education Program

 

Purpose

The purpose of the STC – Central Iowa Continuing Education Program is foster and support the professional development of our members.  This program supports members who are pursuing

·  An established degree program in some aspect of technical and business communication

·  New skills necessary to stay competitive in the job market

·  Conference/workshop attendance that contributes to the profession of technical and business communication

 

Eligibility

To be eligible for the STC – Central Iowa Continuing Education Program, an applicant must

·  Have current STC member status at the time of application and award.

·  Study communication of information about technical and business subjects.  Journalism, computer programming, creative writing, or entertainment classes are not eligible.

·  Live or work in STC Region 6 or be a member of the STC – Central Iowa Community.

·  Agree to provide community service by either presenting a summary at a community meeting or writing an article for the Web site within six months of course/conference completion.

 

Awards

Three $500 awards will be granted toward school tuition, conference or workshop registration, and expenses (books and fees). 

 

Deadline for Applications

Applications must be received by July 15, 2005, to be considered for the 2005 – 2006 program year.

 

Applicants who are interested in a conference or workshop but do not have a specific course available at the time of application will be considered as if the specific course is available.  This is contingent upon notifying the committee when the course or workshop is offered during the 2005-2006 program year.

 

How to Apply

To apply for an award from the STC – Central Iowa Continuing Education Committee, show us your organizational and technical communication skills.  Be persuasive, yet clear and concise.  Use any format you prefer, but use no more than 1500 words and 3 graphics.

How to Apply, continued

To apply for a Continuing Education grant

 

·  For all applicants:

·   Explain how you meet our eligibility requirements (see above).

·   Include your full name and mailing address, including information about the best way to contact you in August (phone numbers, e-mail, addresses).

·   Provide information about how to send a check to your university or workshop/conference on your behalf (contact name and/or title, office name if applicable, address, account number)

·   An essay explaining your technical communication experience (or communication experience, or technical experience) so far.  Also include a description of your career goals, significant achievements to date.  You may include a copy of your resume.  NOTE:  Do not send work samples, as they will not be reviewed.  Essays will be evaluated on writing quality and content.

 

·  For college/university applicants: 

·   A copy of any document showing the tuition and fees (a page from the catalog, or the tuition bill itself).  If there are multiple rates, explain which rate applies to you.

·   A copy of the course description

·   A letter of recommendation from a faculty member

 

·  For workshop/conference applicants:

·   A copy of any document showing registration and fees (the conference brochure, or an invoice)

·   A copy of the workshop/conference description.  If one is not available at the time of application, describe the type of workshop you’d like to attend (for example, Adobe, Information Mapping, layout and page design)

·   A letter of recommendation from a supervisor or manager at your workplace.
